Dear SEFIans


I read about the wonderful discussions on the vast topic of Present and Future of Structural Engineering.


In my understanding, at Undergraduate level education, a glimpse of civil engineering is shown to a student who can select his own area and openings in future.


当一个新的工程师将脚放入博览会ure of a new and vast world of Structural Engineering, (s)he can choose to go for higher studies or join practice. In our system, since there is increase of knowledge with experience, we tend to see them as another kid coming into workforce who may be better equipped with technology. This attitude (not generalized) of ‘the kid knows nothing’ hurts the budding engineer. So we need a more nurturing environment in our profession.


Issues in curricula: In our education as Ms Alpa earlier pointed out, there is very less communications knowledge and little emphasis on ‘non-engineering’ subjects. For example, Business English, Engineering Mechanics, Engineering Mathematics are shown as ‘non-departmental’ subjects. Also seminar and research based projects are very few at undergraduate level.





Practical exposure of students: In the laboratories, very few students take part, so hands-on exposure is not there in classrooms. I guess in Maharastra, there is an option (Not sure whether it is compulsory) to get engaged in construction or engineering related activities in the real life in MPLAD or JNURM (ATAL) Yojanas. We can make the exposure through MNarega In this way a student gets exposure and develops his ‘voice’ for tackling real world and students feel ‘empowered’ in decision making. The communication and negotiation skills also gets polished.




Contract: We are in a colonial hangover in our Client oriented Contract, where there is little scope of innovation rather than following norms by the executing agencies. That hinders thinking for innovativeness.


Professional Branding: Our industry is suffering from problem of plenty and there is little chance of one Engineer to switch from Site to Design office or vise-versa. Those who want to switch fails to gather proper remuneration at par with market, thereby reducing morale and confidence.


PE Certification: The certification for PE shall be made compulsory. At present there are two or three Certification Bodies, which is again confusing.

I think we can get out from the situation by looking the issues holistically.
