I am a graduate student studying structural engineering. I just finished my first semester and recently applied to a summer internship at a great company and got an interview coming up! I�m very excited but also very nervous about the technical question portion of the interview. I do plan to extensively review my basic engineering knowledge but if anyone has interviewed students before, some technical questions would be appreciated! Even if you haven�t interviewed before, what are some questions you would ask or want a student to be able to answer?

Hi,

Let me give you a brief idea of what the interviewer expects you to know as a fresher. I have been in both positions of giving as well as taking interview for the position of structural engineer.


  1. Basic concepts of structural analysis (Degrees of freedom, SFD, BMD)
  2. Load calculation of UDL, UVL, point load on one way, Two way slabs, Staircase, Beams, etc
  3. Typed of load- Dead Load, Live Load, Wind Load, Siesmic Load and their application on members.
  4. Design of the aforementioned members and foundation (Isolated and combined footing- with/ without moment.

By and large your interview questions shall be from these topics.
Best books to clear these concepts would be-
Limit State Theory and Design of RCC by Shah & Karve,

Illustrations of Reinforced Concrete buildings by Shah & Karve,
Steel Structures by S.K. Duggal
