Good old topic for all fresh graduates and still eligible for govt. jobs. What do you look for in a job is a more basic question rather than comparing private, govt., self-emp. or business.

I share my perspective based on the similar discussion with one of my prof. K.V.Dinesh.
3 priorities highlighted by Prof. K.V.D.:
FAME (need to be recognized or praised),
SATISFACTION (in how they are doing the job for the joy of doing it, how the job makes the difference in society/market),
钱(其生计的生命线,安全内核ity).

As per prof. K.V.D. generally people settle for 2 priorities out of 3 and I totally agree with him.
I further add my perspectives below to this topic.
People decide these priorities as per their (parameters) temperament, attitude, circumstances they are brought up, their perceptions of how society values them and how they accept that valuation and their responsibilities towards society (immediate and at large), geo-economical location (like where you are :tier 1,2,3 cities, state, nation etc.), family connections/establishments and alike.
Depending on the parameters set, an individual weighs any 2 priorities and finds his work. If all three are satisfied, the individual shall consider himself lucky.

Govt. Jobs:
Sadly, the govt. jobs are notorious because they mostly fall trap to manipulation by non-administrative and market forces.
Upright people entering the jobs and with less patience give up and come out of it.
Upright people who are still there performing with patience are running the successful undertakings.
So you may get secure job, lot of crucial responsibility to make positive changes to society.
If you are lucky or work on improving your luck (mange to get in the good books without dirtying your hands) you may get FAME.
MONEY is OK and that's the big catch. When you are surrounded by people exhibiting fake prosperity you may demoralize yourself to wet your beak!; or
just frustrate and pass on the same to your team who relies on you and make the department and public money defunct!
- - - if you are already from a well to do family and not in hurry for money, do good work and get the FAME and SATISFACTION. If you are not from a well to do family and want to stay ethical and in govt. job, discuss with your family, you owe a lot to them. Or the other reasons which will drive you to join govt. service is to take bribes or job insecurity. period.

Private jobs:
or say free market, keeps you on toes, makes you practical, throws you to actual problems, expects theory=practice, shows you how much your knowledge is required (or not), more all-legal MONEY, but no security.
Private jobs in India, cannot provide you reasonable money unless you are with contracting giants or commercial consulting organizations (having components of their outside jobs or) operating in 'metro' cities with quality municipal engineers asking for good products before authorizing designs; Provides you flexibility to change jobs and places you want to work for on 'project basis'. Developed and organized markets pay you reasonable.

- - - if you want to take complete responsibility of your work, societal status and money, get to private job or self. emp. or business.

In self. emp. and business you need experience, family background conducive to develop business attitude and practice, choose customers wisely, physically be in a market which needs your service, be patient with money, operate on sole proprietorship or associate model (Take care of these aspects: assisting engineers cannot be paid well, market will know you and not your team, so difficult to retain engineers; know and deal with the fact that the diplomatic regulations does not support genuine service providers neither discourage them), dedicate first generation consulting practice for customer-client development process and few more.

All the best.

No doubtGovernment Jobsare better, but it requires a lot of dedication and hard work to get into it. if a private sector employee earns 5 crore p.a. and Katrina kaif, still he cant earn reputation and respect that an IAS, defence officers have.

Okay fine... but then how will you respond to this:

Quote:
... Except a very few Civil Engineering Construction companies, most of the construction companies are not managed professionally. Mostly they are controlled by family members who have their own whims and fancies. In such companies one is almost like a slave with out fixed working hours, no assured salary / increments ...

(opinion from K.B)
