Yes, we should extend the e-conference till say noon of Sunday so that one is able to go
through the two articles put on the SEFI site and also the material prepared bt the Blue Ribbon
Group of WSSI and come up with few more points of discussion and suggestion for action.

Pankaj Gupta has given deep thought to the issue on licensing and seems to have worked out some
plan of action already. I too may like to join the group appearing on eVAP.

While there are a little over 500 members on SEFI list, we need to increase this considerably
and continuously. Several of us are practicing structural engineers with several engineers
employed. Each one is a resource who is needed to be a well informed professional and an active
and responsible one too. It is in our professional group's interest that each one of these are
asked to register with SEFI. And then your friends and colleagues may not be in the circuit -
we must get them aboard SEFI.

One more point I wish to share is that besides Structural Engineering, the other important
areas relating to SE also need similar quality upgradation and these are Geotechnical
Engineering, Construction and Project Management. Although I am tempted to make the forum more
broad based by bringing in Hydraulic Engg. and Transportation Engg into the Forum, it is best
to keep them seperate. A Civil Engineer with Project Management training or experience should
be in a position to be the lead consultant just as an Architect is. There are some architects
who are happy in designing spaces just as some Civil Engrs like to do the design of structures
only and some others prefer dealing with soils only or be part of the construction group, the
Civil Engr with PM training is competent to do the PM. A PM consultant may then be a Civil
Engineer or an Architect but the person actually designing the structure has to be a structural

compliance to regulations in the design of the architect and also following of codalpractices
by the structural engr. It will be the duty of the PM Consultant to ensure that the
construction contractor has licensed engineer (may be a diploma) working on jobs and not any
person just employed. I am delving in a different arena hence will elaborate this aspect on
SEFI.

Since the closing time is being extended (hopefully), I shall write some pertinent points
before closure on Sunday.
